A new fishing derby planned for next July will provide a tourist draw after Independence Day, typically one of the slower times during the summer season in Lake George.
The first King George Fishing Derby is planned for July 19 to 21. Plans were unveiled Monday by Mayor Robert Blais, the Lake George S.A.V.E. partnership committee and the Lake George Fishing Alliance.
“We want in some way to show our appreciation to the fisherman for their unconditional support and at the same time raise awareness of the fantastic fishing opportunities of our lake,” Blais said in a news release.
The lakewide event will award prizes for catches of three species: Lake trout, smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. There will be a junior category for those younger than 16.
The weekend's itinerary appeals to more than fishermen and women. It also utilizes the new Charles R. Wood festival space where a trade and craft show, live music and barbecue are planned. There also will be a trade show featuring national companies involved in the fishing industry.
There's also an opening reception, seminars and programming for women at the Fort William Henry Hotel & Conference Center, according to a news release.
Children’s rides and scenic boat cruises will also be available as well as early registration.
Boaters who arrive that Friday can register, have an on-site free inspection and launch to berth their boats at the village docks. Both Mossy Point and the new Million Dollar Beach launches will be utilized. Weigh stations will be located in both the north and south basin.
The S.A.V.E. committee expects occupancy tax from Warren County and the towns of Bolton, Lake George and Queensbury as well as the village will help underwrite the event. It's also being sponsored by S.A.V.E., which has helped the Lake George Park Commission with the mandatory boat inspection program, according to the release.
